After working on my retro tank game (which has a working demo, and is totally playable already) I found myself very much liking the idea of making the kinds of games I loved playing as child in the '90s. The game I'm working on right now is heavily inspired by old DOS games like Wings, Auts and Liero. The genre of the game is "luolalentely", which is Finnish for "flying around in caves", or basically "cave shooter". It's a genre that was big among Finns in the '90s, thanks to many Finnish game developers making their versions of it. I find it mind-blowing how good and content-filled these old games were, and it feels crazy how now, in 2024, someone like me, with mediocre coding skills, can attempt to make their own game in the this genre, thanks to a good open sourced game engine.
There's already quite a few elements working in the game despite having worked on it for less than two weeks now. I'm following my "do fun stuff first" mantra again, as that has felt like the best approach for my hobby projects, and I also feel like I get a lot done this way.
What's already working:
Next up is working on boring stuff for a change - making round start/end screens and a menu system for the game. Just like the tank game demo I made, I'm planning on making this game very customizable, so you can set the game up the way you and your friends most enjoy it.
I'll be updating this page as I progress developing the game.
